Best of the Rest

Before we end this round up I thought I would mention two other games that might interest any science fiction television fans. First up, Star Trek will be doing a Star Wars with its upcoming title Star Trek Online. It is being developed by Perpetual with beta probably starting around the Summer of next year. You will be able to play as Human, Vulcan, Klingon, Bajoran, Bolian, Trill, Tellarite, Andorian with the initial game focusing solely on the Starfleet (although there are plans in the future to expand this).

The game will focus on both space and ground aspects, so expect to do some Shatner-esque slugging matches with some alien nasties. The developers are planning on making a system that works fluidly between space and ground combat, no simple task.

The other game that may tickle your fancy will be Stargate Worlds. The game, which will be based on the popular television series 'SG-1' and 'Stargate Atlantis' is planned to be launched in 2007 and recently made the announcement that it would be using the Unreal 3 engine. At the moment there isn't much in the way of actual screenshots, but any game with a franchise as big as Stargate combined with the lush looking Unreal 3 engine is bound to be worth a look.

Conclusion

I'm sure many of you will be fuming that the MMORPG game you're most looking forward to hasn't been included on this list but the truth is the genre has just too many titles on the horizon. The majority of MMORPG titles will flop, with lots of fat cat businessmen probably throwing tantrums, wondering why their MMORPG can't make the hundreds of millions of WoW.

The truth is, WoW is a very special game, and, much like the original Counter-Strike, will take a lot to knock it off the top. Furthermore, WoW will be releasing its latest expansion pack Burning Crusade shortly, which will only further improve the games popularity and stronghold as the premiere MMORPG. With Warhammer Online the only game I can seriously see knocking WoW off its perch, and with that not coming out for at least another year, it looks like WoW will be King for some time to come.
